Our History

French City Southern Baptist Church was founded on January 26, 1964 in Gallipolis, OH with 24 charter members. This was the result of 3 years of hard work, planning and preparation by a group of men who were determined to see a southern Baptist church in the Gallia County area. Sponsorship of the church by Emmanuel Baptist Church out of Jackson, OH helped make their dreams a reality. During those three years of preparation, small worship services were held in homes and rented spaces around the area. While working to start their own church, the founding members of French City Baptist Church also assisted with the startup of several other churches and ministries in surrounding counties. The property where the church is currently located was purchased in 1964 and ground breaking for a new building on the site occurred on July 3, 1966. During construction a time capsule was placed in the cornerstone. The first service in the new sanctuary was held on October 2, 1966, with 84 members and 11 to be baptized. The official dedication of the building was held on January 8, 1967. French City Southern Baptist church continues to operate with open arms and open hearts for the Gallia County community.
